BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - TEAM UNITY candidate for Constituency Number Two, Jonel Powell has issued a challenge to his opponent the Hon. Marcella Liburd to a public debate next week.

Speaking at a Team Unity meeting last evening (Feb. 1) on Central Street, Powell shared an open letter he wrote to Liburd in which the challenge was issued.

“The people are saying that they intend to correct the mistake that they made five years ago. They say they want all politicians who are running as candidates to represent them and to debate one another so that the constituents could better learn about their plans and programmes, especially her in Central Basseterre.

“With that in mind, I hereby formally challenge you Marcella Liburd to a public debate on Monday, February 8, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. in the heart of this Constituency, right there on the corner of Finnes Avenue and Central Street.”

He further informed the current Representative for the area that failure to turn up for the challenge would show failure on the people of the Constituency.

“All arrangements will be made and you shall not have to worry about any responsibilities. All the constituents of this Constituency will be given the opportunity to hear our plans and decide for themselves which candidate best deserves your vote come election day.

“I will be there waiting Marcella, between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. on February 8, 2015 at the corner of Finnes Avenue and Central Street. If you truly believe in the people of Central Basseterre, I expect you to show up for this appointment and let us debate the issues…and let the people decide for themselves who they want to represent them.

“If you fail to show up then you have proved to the voters of Central Basseterre that once again you have abandoned them.”

Powell declared that for the past two weeks he was searching for Liburd with no success, but the letter would be placed in a convenient place for her to receive it.

“Unfortunately, after looking for you for the past two weeks, I cannot find you. I am forced to leave a copy of this letter at the doorstep of your Constituency office so that one of your workers may have it in their possession first thing Monday morning to pass it on to you.”
