BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FIVE young men from St. Paul’s Village, who were convicted  on May 9, 2014 for the murder of Gregory Anthony Zakers, were each recently sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

A police communiqué issued over the weekend informs that the men are Nelson Challenger, Glenroy Smithen, Moses Challenger, Shenroy Francis and Jomi Rawlins.

The incident for which the men were convicted took place sometime between April 10 – 12, 2008 and it was at the end of that period Zakers’ lifeless body was discovered on a cliff at Black Rocks.

The men did not get their day in court until six years after the incident, and the case included a couple of voirdires and a number of closed hearings to decide how it should proceed regarding hostile witnesses.

After about two hours of deliberations on May 9, the jury returned to the courtroom with a guilty verdict.

His Lordship Justice Darshan Ramdhani presided over the case and the convicted men were expected to have been sentenced during the next criminal assizes.

However, Justice Ramdhani had left the jurisdiction and only recently returned, at which point the men were sentenced. SKNVibes understands that social inquiry reports were prepared for the men ahead of their sentencing.

The police press release indicated that although the men were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment, it includes the seven years that they had already spent at Her Majesty’s Prison.
