BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE idea of constructing a physical bridge to connect the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis was resuscitated on Thursdaylast evening (Feb. 12) as part of the plan to increase the oneness between the two islands.

Deputy Prime Minister and Constituency Number Two representative for the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) the Hon. Asim Martin, spoke of the idea during the SKNLP/Nevis Reformation Party’s (NRP) political meeting/concert held in Nevis before thousands of supporters.

He said as a means of promoting a bond between the people of St. Kitts and the people of Nevis, the Government has intentions of constructing a bridge.

“We want to ensure that in the future there is a oneness between St. Kitts and Nevis and the Government intends to construct a bridge between St. Kitts and Nevis. No longer must people be taking the Sea Bridge, no longer must people be coming up here on no Coast Guard boat…We must be able to drive on our bridge that will link St. Kitts and Nevis as one nation and have a oneness. That is what we intend to do for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Martin did not give a time frame in which the construction of this bridge is expected to be completed or when it would be expected to begin. He however explained that the presence of the bridge would aid in economic growth of both islands.

“It would improve economic development between the both islands. The cruise passengers would be able to drive straight off the bridge in St. Kitts and come right over to Nevis. That is the oneness we talking about. The economic development must spread for both St. Kitts and Nevis.”

SKNVibes understands that the idea for the construction of a connecting bridge was broached by the first Prime Minister of the Federation and former leader of the People’s Action Movement, Sir Kennedy A. Simmonds, sometime around 1993.
