An Open Letter To Prime Minister Elect Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris

Kennedy Pemberton
Press Release
    February 17, 2015
    Dear Dr. Hon. Timothy Harris:

The last 24 months in St. Kitts and Nevis have seen unprecedented political and legal wrangling, much of which has caused our Nation, particularly young persons, to question the principles being espoused and precedents being set by our Nation.

Among the issues were three (3) unanswered Motions of No Confidence brought against a sitting Administration, three (3) court cases on the state of our Constituency Boundaries, Parliamentary Sittings that caused citizens to hang their head in shame and question the examples being set by our elected leaders, in addition to numerous infractions, breaches, and outright episodes of  committed against the Constitution of our land.

To say that the events leading up to the elections of February 16, 2015 were a travesty and national embarrassment is a ‘politically correct’ understated description of our state of affairs, and I assure you that I have heard much harsher descriptions of these ‘unusual’ circumstances especially from members of the youth populace.

On this the occasion of your selection as the 3rd Prime Minister elect of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis I take this opportunity to remind you of a few key things:

    1. There is an established and growing population of young persons who are now more than ever
discussing the aforementioned and other national issues, and many of us believe in putting Country Above Self.
    2. You have been given an opportunity to lead the departure from the current state of affairs, and as the identified leader of Team Unity history will judge you harshly if you ever allow yourself to fall into a similar modus operandi.
    3. There is a clear need for healing and the cultivation of love and respect across party lines, as a precursor to building a new brand of politics, where the interest of Political Parties never again supersedes the National interest.
    4. Honour every promise you have made to the people of St. Christopher and Nevis because you have a responsibility to deliver on the commitments given to this Nation during your campaign.

Dr. Harris, as you lead your team spread across St. Christopher and Nevis I urge the incoming Team Unity Administration to remain focused on the issues, that have caused worry, stress, anger, and even acts of violence among some members of our population. Chief among the issues I would wish to see addressed in a substantive manner is the perceived or expe cted victimization of those who voted against Team Unity at the polls, or those who in the future may espouse opposing views to your Administration.Make no mistake, there are other important ‘Matters of State’ to be addressed and to openly express my bias I would hope that Job Creation, Relations with Nevis, Land & Housing Development, the Citizenship By Investment Programme, Renewable Energy, Education, Youth Empowerment, Electoral and Constitutional Reform, and Tourism Development rank high on the Team Unity Agenda.

Ultimately, Dr. Harris the ball is in your court, and I can assure you that ALL eyes are on you, especially amongst ours Nation’s youth.

    Sincerely,
    Kennedy Pemberton
    Citizen
    Central Basseterre
