BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LONG before the official results were announced, Team Unity had switched into celebration gear with many supporters converging on Church Street in front of Government Headquarters.

But it was not until about 5:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon (Feb. 17) – 23 hours after the polls were closed - that Supervisor of Elections Wingrove George announced via state-owned media ZIZ Television and Radio that the majority of seats had been won by Team Unity candidates.

On the evening that the ballots were being counted (Feb. 16), the first set of results were not given until around 11:00 p.m. and were announced steadily with the first two seats to be declared being Constituencies 10 and Two.

Constituency 10 won by Premier of Nevis the Hon. Vance Amory of the Concerned Citizens Movement and Constituency Number Two was won by Marcella Liburd of the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party.

The announcements ceased sometime after 3:00 p.m. and it was eventually announced via ZIZ radio and television by the panelists that they had received information indicating that no further results would be declared for the day.

By 4:30 a.m., unofficial reports began circulating throughout the Federation that the Unity coalition had secured seven of the 11 seats, but no officially announcement was made.

WINN FM however announced that the counters for particular Constituencies stated that Ian Liburd had edged out the incumbent Dr. Asim Liburd by a mere four votes in Constituency Number One. And in Constituency Five, the incumbent Shawn K. Richards blew away Dr. Norgen Wilson by several hundred votes. It was also revealed that after the count at Constituency Number Four, Lindsay Grant succeeded the incumbent Glenn Phillip.

It was also announced that the information had already been forwarded to the Supervisor of Elections and questions were asked as to why he was not announcing the results.

Meanwhile, calls were made by Chairman of the SKNLP Nigel Carty, the CARICOM Observer Mission, CARICOM Chairman the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the St. Kitts Christian Council, the St. Kitts Evangelical Association, the St. Kitts and Nevis Bar Association, the St. Kitts and Nevis Hotel and Tourism Association and the St. Kitts Nevis Small Business Forum and others, for the Supervisor of Elections to complete his constitutional duties and announce the results.

Some of these groups even described the delays as “excessive and unsettling” and even suggested that his actions or lack thereof “lead us to no other conclusion than that your disgraceful conduct was intended to subvert the will of the people as expressed in the General Elections”.

In a brief interview with ZIZ, George indicated that he did not announce the other results because they were being contested and had he announced them, it would have been unfair to the contesting parties. He promised however that by midday yesterday, the results would have been announced.

The winners were not declared until late yesterday afternoon but the results per polling division were not revealed.

Even before the break of dawn yesterday, Unity supporters were flooding the streets of Sandy Point, Basseterre and other areas celebrating their victory, and this afternoon (Feb. 18) the Unity train heads to Nevis where the celebration will continue.
