BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ALTHOUGH his effort could be considered valiant, Jonel Powell of the People’s Action Movement and Team Unity was not successful against the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party’s Marcella Liburd, who both contested Constituency Number Two during the recent General Elections.
Liburd contested the seat twice and on the first occasion, she got majority of the votes cast in all of the boxes.
This time around however, Powell, new-comer to the political arena, managed to win the majority votes in four of the boxes.
After the final count however, Liburd was declared winner of the seat by more than 130 votes.
In an interview with SKNVibes, Liburd said she has mixed emotions concerning her victory but expressed that it was a special triumph, especially because of what she had to endure on the lead-up to the Elections.
“Well, I have mixed feelings but also we will move forward. We are determined, we have a conviction about the country which we will continue to promote. We believe that there are many things, many lessons to be learnt…
“I am still happy that I was able to win because I don’t think there was any other candidate in this race that the focus on them was like me. So that makes it sweeter. No other candidate in this race had the things thrown at them that I had. None! So for me, it was very sweet.”
Liburd acknowledged that she could not have won her seat were it not for her dedicated constituents, colleagues and workers. She said she owes them a debt of gratitude.
“I want to thank all of my workers, all of my colleagues, all of the constituents, those who voted for me and those who didn’t vote for me. I want to thank all of them…giving thanks.”
