Wendy Phipps among nine National Unity Govt. Ministers

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONE female, who was described as a driving force of Team Unity, was among nine individuals who were sworn in last evening (Feb. 22) as Ministers of the Government of National Unity of St. Kitts and Nevis.

     

    She is the former Executive Director of the St. Kitts and Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Hon. Wendy Coleen Phipps, who was appointed Minister of State with responsibility for Health, Community Development, Gender Affairs and Social Services.

    The Swearing In Ceremony took place at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium, where all the Ministers, including Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Sylvester Harris, took the Oaths of Allegiance, Office and Secrecy in the presence of thousands of supporters.

    The Oaths were administered by Resident Judge, Her Ladyship Justice Marlene Carter and the Instruments of Appointment were signed and delivered to the Ministers by the Governor-General, His Excellency Sir Edmund Lawrence.

    In addition to being elected Prime Minister of the twin-island Federation, Dr. Harris also holds the portfolios of Minister of Finance, Sustainable Development, National Security, People Empowerment and Constituency Empowerment.

    Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Five and Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) as well as one of two Deputy Leaders of Team Unity, the Hon. Shawn Kenneth Richards has added another deputy title to his name. He was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture.

    From sister isle Nevis, Parliamentary Representative for Constituency 10 and Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Vance Winkworth Amory was appointed Senior Minister and Minister of Nevis Affairs, Labour, Social Security and Ecclesiastical Affairs, while his Deputy and Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Nine as well as the other Deputy Leader of Team Unity, the Hon. Mark Anthony Graham Brantley, was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation.

    Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Eight and PAM’s Deputy Leader, the Hon. Eugene Alastair Hamilton holds the portfolios of Minister of Agriculture, Health, Health Insurance, Human Settlements, Community Development, Gender Affairs, Social Services, Land and Cooperatives.

    PAM’s newcomer candidate Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd is now the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency One and was appointed Minister of Public Infrastructure, Posts, Urban Development and Transport, while the Hon. Lindsay Fitzpatrick Grant, who has been knocking on the ministerial door since 2004, is now the Parliamentary Representative for Constituency Four and Minister of Tourism, International Trade, Industry and Commerce.

    Attorney-at-Law Vincent Fitzpatrick Byron Jr. was sworn in as the Federation’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Legal Affairs and Communications, while the Hon. Michael Anthony Perkins of the Concerned Citizens Movement was appointed Senator in the Federal Government without portfolio.

    While the appointments of the Hon. Dr. Harris as Prime Minister and the Hon. Byron as Attorney-General dates back to Wednesday (Feb. 18) their other portfolios and those of the other appointees take effect from Sunday, February 22, 2015.
     
    Among the dignitaries present at the Swearing In Ceremony were: Former Governor-General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian, past Governor Sir Probyn Innis and Lady Innis, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda the Hon. Gaston Browne, first Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Sir Kennedy Simmonds and Lady Simmonds, Deputy Prime Minister of Grenada the Hon. Elvin Nimrod, Antigua’s Parliamentarian Johan Massiah, Leader of the Opposition in St. Vincent and the Grenadines the Hon. Arnhim Eustace, Leader of the Opposition in St. Lucia Allen Chastanet, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, and members of the Clergy..
