BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NEWLY-ELECTED Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris has promised that his Government of National Unity would ensure all citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis receive a fairer share of the national resources.

Dr. Harris made this promise, among others, last evening (Feb. 22) at the Inaugural Swearing In Ceremony of nine members of Team Unity, including one female, who were appointed Ministers of the Government of National Unity.

The historic ceremony was held at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in the presence of thousands of supporters and well-wishers, Government representatives from neighbouring islands and former Governors-General of St. Kitts and Nevis.

“I promise you that my Cabinet will lead this country with your help and with your prayers to a better place for all the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and not just for some of the people. I promise you that this, your Government, shall be the Government of all the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis. I promise you that your Government will be fair, fair to all, and we shall ensure that all of our citizens and residents receive a fairer share of the national resources.

He thanked God for the victory Team Unity gained at the Monday, February 16, 2015 General Elections and pledged to make life better for everyone in the twin-island Federation.

“I want to thank God for paving me and my team with His goodwill and providing the guidance that has brought us to this place at this moment of time in the life of our country. It is a tremendous honour and an extraordinary privilege for me to serve you as our country’s Prime Minister and I give you now my solemn pledge that I will spend every waking minute of every hour, of every day that God blesses me with. Henceforth, giving all, as it were, working full-throttle to make life better for you the people of my beloved St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The Prime Minister declared that on the launch of Team Unity, many people had the belief that its members would have failed in their quest to wrestle political leadership from the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, but they have proven them wrong.

“Many thought that this was an impossible dream that we had. Many doubted that it could be done, but by the grace of God it had been done. And we had made history and we shall be the model for the rest of the Caribbean to follow. We the people determined that enough was enough. It was the time to end victimisation, it was the time to end political discrimination and it was time for us as a people to join forces across the political divide and come together in unity.”

He thanked all those who had believed in Team Unity’s vision and also those who were activated when they saw it in action.

Dr. Harris also thanked the two former Governors-General of the Federation and the supporters who turned out at the launch of Team Unity.

“I thank our first Prime Minister for his eloquent support for the Team Unity initiative. I thank our former Governor-General Sir Cuthbert Sebastian who gave silent counsel and support to Sam Condor and myself as we embarked on this journey. But I must thank the thousands of you who gathered at Greenlands on 26th September when we launched Team Unity and we say onward, forward to victory with Team Unity.

“Today we have realised that victory and I say to God be the glory...great things He had done for the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.”
Continuing in expressing his gratitude Dr. Harris said: “I want to thank, in particular, the Leaders of the other two parties that comprise Team Unity. I want to salute my good friend the Hon. Vance Amory, Premier and Leader of the Concerned Citizens Movement. I have said time and time again that he has been a stabilising source of support for Team Unity.

“Many asked many times if Vance Amory supporting Team Unity. Vance, as we have come to know, is not a man of many words, but when he gives his word his word is his bond. And today we are standing strong because his word has always been his bond. I hail him, I salute him and I will always remember and cherish his many wise counsels when many difficulties had been averted. Equally, I give gratitude and thanks to the Leader of the People’s Action Movement, the Hon. Shawn Richards and his team for being in support for Team Unity.”

Sharing his experience with the thousands at Warner Park and the thousands in radio land, Prime Minister Harris said that prior to and during the Elections campaign, Team Unity had travelled throughout the Federation to speak to the people and find solutions to their problems.

“We went through the length and breadth of this country meeting people, consulting with people, hearing their concerns and their dreams, understanding them and attempting to come up with solutions that would satisfy the dreams and aspirations of our people.

“We spoke with young people and we spoke with old people; we spoke with rich people and we spoke with our economic citizens; we spoke with the poor and needy and we recognised wherever they stood our people want the best for St. Kitts and Nevis, and that was the common goal that should unite us always.”

Dr. Harris stated that yesterday was the beginning of a new era and hopes that all and sundry would work harmoniously together, despite political affiliations.

“We start today on a new journey of new beginnings and I wish that it will certainly be a new beginning for all of our people; for Labour people, for PAM people, for CCM people, for NRP people, even for NIP people and those who are not affiliated. Because certainly it is a historic journey, and I recall everywhere that we went throughout this campaign we recognised the opportunity for us working together to make history on behalf of the people.”
