BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HUNDREDS of Special Olympians assembled today (Feb. 25) at the Silver Jubilee Stadium to participated in the Special Olympics National Games.

Three teams from St. Kitts, Nevis and Connecticut were on show in a track and field display.

At the opening of the games, Director of Sports Geoffrey Hazel highlighted how sports could change the lives of some of the young athletes.

“The Special Olympics National Games have become a landmark for people with disabilities, federally, and it is a landmark in the progress of mankind toward seeking immense capabilities and possibilities. It is through these games we realise that sport is about what we can do. It is about what we can achieve, the limits that we can reach and the barriers that we can break. Everything that sports stand for, we are going to see right here.

“With the many strides made over the past five decades, there are still many persons who doubt the power of the human spirit to overcome all kinds of limitations and challenges.”

He also lauded the individuals who were behind the Special Olympics movement

“It has taken a lot of hard work by many people to get to this point. I want to thank the entire organising team, including Clarice Cotton and Ivor Blake, for their dedication and excellence in the Special Olympics movement. The Special Olympics movement changes the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sports, and it promotes the idea of each person, regardless of their ability, being a valuable members of society.”

The day’s proceedings began with the lighting of a torch in the middle of the track, which was brought by members of Police Force and the Fire Service officers and relayed around the track by some of the Special Olympians.
