Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd ends 20-year run of former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Asim Martin

The Hon. Ian ’Patches’ Liburd already hard at work
Press Release

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 3, 2015 (Team Unity Secretariat) - In one of the most talked about results from the recently concluded General Elections, long-time public servant, popular radio host and entertainer, Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, brought the 20-year Parliamentary run of former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Asim Martin to a screeching halt.

Long considered the luckiest politician in St. Kitts-Nevis politics, Dr. Martin’s luck ran out on Election Day 2015 as newcomer Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd stopped the four-term Parliamentarian dead in his tracks with a nail-biting four-vote victory.

Christopher ‘Moonlight’ Roberts confirmed Liburd’s four-vote victory in what will go down as the most eventful and controversial Election Night in history.

Roberts called in to WINN FM and stated that the count in the East Basseterre Constituency was completed and that Liburd was the confirmed winner; a situation which had already been indicated to the Acting Supervisor of Elections, Wingrove ‘Parrot’ George.

The Supervisor refused to announce the result there, as well as results for all the remaining constituencies except for St. Christopher Two and Nevis 10 whose results had already been announced and the winners declared.

To date, no official detailed final count has been disclosed except for the overall count in each constituency as reported and confirmed by counting agents.

The now Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd ran what many described as a grassroots campaign which relied heavily on his familiarity and knowledge of his constituency and constituents.

Running his “You Know Me, I Know You” campaign, which emphasized and highlighted his familiarity with his community, Liburd was able to unseat the second highest ranking Government Minister in Dr. Denzil Douglas administration.

Martin seemingly ran a campaign that relied heavily on huge financing which saw hundreds of billboards plastered all over the constituency.

Liburd’s victory would suggest that while Martin strove to impress voters with pomp, bravado and flare, he impressed with personal relationships, touching hearts and souls with one-on-one interaction.

Liburd was named Minister of Public Infrastructure, Posts, Urban Development and Transport during last week Sunday’s (Feb. 22) Swearing In of the new historic Team UNITY Cabinet.
