By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 05, 2015 (SKNIS)  --   Officers of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) had a familiarization meeting with Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris in his capacity as Minister of National Security, on Wednesday (March 04)

During the meeting held at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conference room, Prime Minister Harris highlighted the need for the people to have confidence in the nation’s security agencies.

“It is important that we the good citizens of St. Christopher and Nevis must always be able to have our confidence reposed in the security institutions of the state of St. Kitts and Nevis,” Prime Minister Harris said, whilst asserting that safety must at all times be the agencies top priority.

The Prime Minister reflected on the recently held “2014 Constable of the Year” Nevis Division award ceremony, where officers on the island were recognized for outstanding achievements.

“At a special function in Nevis, honouring the contribution of the largest corps of officers in the force, the police constables, I had occasion then to reflect upon your mission statement and how it amply spells out what we need from our men and women in uniform,” he said. “I want to refer to it again, because this is the promise, this is the undertaking, this is the commitment that you have made to us, the good people of St. Kitts and Nevis and this is what every day, every waking moment we must be able to hold you accountable for.”

The Prime Minister reminded the officers that within their mission statement, they promised to uphold the law.

“You said to us, it is your mission to uphold the law, not to uphold the man, to uphold the law of St. Christopher and Nevis,” he said. “The law as set out in our constitutional order of 1983. The law as you understand it to be reflected in the laws of the land of St. Christopher and Nevis, but you have pledged to uphold them fairly and firmly without fear or favour.”

He reminded them of their commitment “to work to keep the peace in St. Kitts and Nevis to protect, to help and reassure residents and visitors of their safety, and they must do all of this with integrity intact and with impartiality.”

He assured officers that in his capacity as Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, he along with his government will provide all the assistance that they can, to ensure the integrity of the state.

“I pledge as your minister to give every support that I can,” he stressed. “We will lend every support that the government can, to ensure that the resources and support you require - to ensure that you effectively and efficiently deliver on this mission.”

Prime Minister Harris was supported at the meeting by the Honourable Vincent Byron, Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs.
