Orange House storm to BHS victory

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - ATHLETES representing Orange House at the Basseterre High School’s Sports Day were jubilant following a scintillating performance to upstage their opponents.

The exciting event took place at the Silver Jubilee Stadium on Saturday (Mar. 7) before hundreds of supporters.

The day’s proceedings was got underway with a March Past and the athletes were inspected by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Sports Hon. Shawn Richards who also provided some words of encouragement to them.

Orange House’s CARIFTA bound Tiwania Robinson proved her class as she convincingly won the 200 and 100 metres titles while setting a new school records in both races as well as anchoring the 4x100 meters Relay team.

Akeem Chumney of Green House, another CARIFTA bound athlete, won the 400, 200 and 100 metres as he outclassed his opponents while setting a new school record in the 100 metres.

A marquee match-up then ensued between Karissa Eddy of Blue House and Shenela Mitchum of Orange House in the Senior Girls category. Eddy captured the 800 metres after Mitchum led the race for most of the distance, but a strong final 100-metre burst by Eddy powered her to victory in a new record time of 2:31.05.

Eddy then came back in the 200 metres and convincingly beat Mitchum to set her second record for the afternoon. She also added the 400 and 100 metres titles to her honours for the afternoon.

Mitchum however left the Silver Jubiliee Stadium a winner as her Orange House were runaway winners on the day.

No fewer than 14 records were broken on Saturday; even some that stood for more than a decade.

After failing on success at the TDC Inter-School Championships last year, the Basseterre High School will be looking to upstage rivals during the 2015 Championships.
