Thursday, March 12 – Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority (BVIPA) Mr. Claude O. Skelton Cline has affirmed that the BVI Cruise Pier Expansion Project will be heavily promoted at the 31st Cruise Shipping Miami exhibition and conference taking place next week, from March 16 to 19.

“As we approach the completion of the pier construction, we are delighted to share the good news with our industry partners. We want to ensure that they know BVI is open for business, and that cruise ships can berth at the new pier beginning April 29, and they spread that good news throughout the industry,” said Mr. Cline.

He continued, “Our other objective is to provide our partners with more information regarding the landside portion of the project, Tortola Pier Park, so as to generate buzz for what we know is a game-changing development. This is exciting for BVI and should be equally as exciting for our partners.”

Mr. Cline is a member of the BVI delegation attending next week’s conference, comprised of both Government officials and industry stakeholders from the Ministry of Communications and Works, BVI Tourist Board, BVI Taxi and Livery Commission, Island Shipping & Trading Co Ltd and Romney and Associates.

Cruise Shipping Miami attracts key industry players including cruise line owners and operators, shipping agents, marine engineers, travel agents and other industry executives. According to event’s website (www.cruiseshippingevents.com/miami), last year’s event attracted over 11,000 attendees and over 900 exhibitors from 127 countries participated. There was also a record total of 349 press represented including TV, magazine, newspaper, online and radio.

The BVIPA and BVI Tourist Board have collaborated for the exhibition booth #985 which presents an ‘island theme’ with attractions like live steel pan music, video display and giveaways.

Speaking at the briefing meeting for delegates at the BVIPA’s headquarters earlier today, BVITB’s Product Development Manager Ms. Victoreen Creque advised the team, “We want to ensure all visitors to our booth know with all certainty that although we represent different agencies, we are one destination. Let’s do what we can to drive traffic to our booth.”

Ms. Creque also told delegates to take advantage of the various workshops and panel discussions that will be led by key industry players and influential cruise executives.

The Government of the Virgin Islands’ representation at Cruise Shipping Miami is in line with promoting the BVI’s cruise pier expansion coming on stream in April. The expansion involves the lengthening, widening and strengthening of the cruise pier. As for landside, BVIPA is building “Tortola Pier Park”, a commercial, retail, cultural, entertainment centre.

The BVI Ports Authority is responsible for the Territory’s cruise infrastructure and facilitates port calls.
