CEMSS crowned Athletics Champs for 22nd time

Champs celebrate with trophy
By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOR the 22nd time in the 38 years of the TDC Inter-School Championships the Charles E Mills Secondary School (CEMSS), formerly the Sandy Point High School, have been crowned Champions of Track and Field in St. Kitts and Nevis after the end of the three-day event.

The almost capacity crowd at the Silver Jubilee Stadium witnessed the CEMSS Eagles raked in gold medal after gold medal as they faced no significant challenge from the other 11 learning institutions in the competition.

Starting the day on 19 Gold medals, they added another 11 on the final day to win by a margin of 13 over 2013 champions Washington Archibald High School.

The final day also saw 25 new records, which meant a total of 53 were broken by SKNVibes’ count over the three-day event.

Leading the charge for CEMSS on day three was Jarencia Jeffers, who won gold and set a new record in the Girls Javelin Throw Under-16 with a distance of 29.80m and Girls 60 meter Hurdles Under-16 in a time of 10.12, while also placing third in the Girls 1200 Under-16.

Reanda Richard, also of CEMSS, captured the Girls 1500 Under-18 in 5:20.54 while Khadijah Mulley won and set a new record of 1.47 metres in the Girls Under-14 High Jump and Ketriana Huggins captured the Girls Under-14 400m as well as the 100 metre in which she set a new record mark.

Tahj Liburd of Charlestown secondary continued his good form by winning the Boys Under 18 400 and 1500 metres while setting new record in both after doing the same in the 800 metres on the previous day.

Royden Peets of Washington Archibald High School also added two gold medals and records to his tally in the Boys Under-14 100 metres in a time of 11.73 and leaping to 5.16m in the Long Jump.

Shanice Elliot of Verchild’s High School also set yet another record in her short athletic career, running 11.95 seconds in the Girls Under-18 100m, while in the Boys section Wayne Matthew of Cayon High School set a new mark of 10.74.

Some exciting relays also took place on the evening but none more so than the Boys Under-18 event won by Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) which led for most of the race. They were however challenged by Cayon High School, whose anchor Wayne Matthew challenged and almost ran down Hasani Rouse of WAHS and gesticulated to him at the line, seemingly indicating that he had successfully passed him in a come-from-behind victory. But it was however proven that WAHS had comfortably won.

At the end of the day however, the athletes of CEMSS were the ones in celebratory mood as they followed up on last week’s victory of that community’s Primary School in the Ram’s Primary Championships.

Dimetre Browne and Jarencia Jeffers of CEMSS were adjudged Victor and Victrix Ludorum respectively.
