St.Kitts –Nevis 4-H Celebrates 93rd birthday with Past 4-H Leader

Press Release

March 26th, 2015  --  It was a joyous occasion at the home of Mrs. Virginia Harris in St.Peters, on Wednesday 25th March, when she was visited by some members and the Executive of the St.Kitts-Nevis 4-H, to spread some birthday cheer. Mrs. Harris who celebrated her 93rd birthday, is a past 4-H leader and is popularly known in her community for having nurtured and lead the St.Peters 4-H club with distinction,  in the earlier days when 4-H was originally started in the federation.

Members of the 4-H presented Mrs.Harris with a fruit basket, prayed and sang several hymns of praise to Mrs.Harris’ delight. She was also rendered with a solo by one of the youngest members of the 4-H from St.Peters. According to the current leader of the St.Peters 4-H Club, Mrs. Althea Chambers, “The 4-H organization is very grateful for the foundation laid by Mrs. Harris in her community and in the country by extension, having helped to mold and shape the lives of many young people of her era. We the members and executive of this youth developmental organization, believe in giving persons their flowers, whilst they are yet alive and it is for this reason we are here today, to share in this beautiful milestone with Mrs.Harris.”

Mrs. Harris’ not only thanked the 4-H members for remembering her contributions and making her feel extra special on her birthday, but she also used the opportunity to take them on a trip down memory lane.  At 93, Mrs. Harris is still very vibrant and energetic and did not hesitate to teach the 4-Hers some of her favorite songs from her days in 4-H, which included “American Girl” and the song “C.H.I.C.K.E.N” with its accompanying dance, which she left her seat to demonstrate with much skill and talent to the excitement of all present. She also had sound words of advice to the young 4-H female members who were present, admonishing them to “study your lesson in school so that the Lord can help you, care yourselves, do not go up and down, and then do the right thing and get married.”

The 4-H program is a youth development, social education movement which helps to inspire youth to have an appreciation for agriculture and aid in their holistic development, by teaching them leadership, public speaking cooking and craft making skills amongst other things, so that they would grow up to be productive citizens and role models. Members are encouraged to live lives consistent with the 4-H pledge which encourages them to pledge their “head for clearer thinking, their hearts for greater loyalty, their hands to larger service and their health for better living, for their club, community, country and world.” The 4-H Motto is “Make the best better.”

The St.Kitts – Nevis 4-H organization will be celebrating its 4th anniversary of the relaunch of the program on April 8th, with several commemorative activities which run from April 8th-April 12th.  Currently there are two active 4-H clubs on St.Kitts and they are located in the Old Road and St.Peters communities. Persons desirous of becoming 4-H leaders or members are asked to contact Ms.Inita Lake at 465 2348 or 660 9575 or Ms.
