2nd annual Black History Quiz sponsored by returning nationals

Principle of BHS raises trophy with pride
By: Lorna Callender, Press Release

    ‘Basseterre High School shines again!’

Basseterre – ST. KITTS - FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING, the St. Kitts- Nevis Returning Nationals Association presented the Caribbean Black History Family Quiz Competition in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

For the second year running the competition was won by the Basseterre High School who continues to triumph in many areas and competitions despite the challenges they face as they strive to overcome their relocation and the shift system they now undergo.

The Quiz competition was held on 12th February (Black History Month) at the St. George’s Anglican Church (Formerly the Old Girls School) and presented five areas of knowledge from which Quiz questions were drawn. They were Caribbean History, Sports, Music, Dance and Theatre and Religion.

With questions drawn from these various areas of local history, the competition presents a wonderful opportunity for students to fill gaps in their knowledge of local culture.  The audience of parents, teachers and school supporters are also much enlightened for such knowledge can rarely be found in any one book.

This year, educational material was distributed to schools from which students could prepare but in spite of all this the Quiz Competition is not seized enough by Schools as an opportunity for learning about themselves.  Of the five schools who had signed up to compete, only two attended. This, however, did not detract from the interest and keenness of the competition.

Basseterre High School and Charles E. Mills Secondary School must be complimented for their participation.  Students and their Schools benefitted from their participation as follows:

    INDIVIDUALS
    1. TARIQUE ALLEN (Basseterre High School) – Winning trophy and cheque for $200.00
    2. KADEEMA BLANCHETTE (Basseterre High School) – Trophy for 1st Runner Up and cheque for $150.00
    3. GARIEL BOWRY (CEM Secondary School) – Trophy for 2nd Runner Up and cheque for $100.00

    2. CHARLES E. MILLS SECONDARY SCHOOL – Trophy for 1st Runner Up and cheque for $750.00 (Principal Mrs. Carla Mills-Diamond; Teacher: Mr. Dwayne Weekes)

Last week Members of the Returning Nationals Association, Mrs. Rita Joseph (Coordinator of the Quiz Competition) and Mr. George Richards, (former President of the Association) motored to the two winning schools and distributed the trophies and monetary prizes at the respective School assemblies. The winning students were wildly cheered by their fellow students and teachers. This ought to serve as an incentive to other students for next year’s competition.
