BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again some of the nation’s youth are being portrayed in a far less than positive light, with the circulation of a video that shows secondary school students in Nevis brutalising each other; one of whom did so with the use of a stone.

SKNVibes understands that a fight took place sometime last week at the Charlestown Secondary School involving female students who range from Second to Fourth Formers, at the end of which one was left with a wound to her head.

The video began with a verbal face-to-face confrontation where one of the students referred to another in a derogatory manner, and after the first blow was thrown the two girls began fighting and fell to the ground.

As the fight continued, another student was seen pelting a series of blows to one of the girls’ heads. A close look at the video shows that a rock the size of an average fist was used in this process.

Even after the student with the rock had lost possession of it, she continued her attack on the other student who was still being beaten by yet another.

The fight was observed, as seen in the video, by at least one dozen students, some of whom appeared to be either videotaping it or taking pictures as it progressed.

By the time the two girls had loosed their hold on each other, the students who received several blows to the head was bleeding therefrom.

In addition to viewing the graphic content of the video, what was particularly disturbing is hearing a male students repeatedly yell “dead” while the brawl took place.

SKNVibes also understands that the matter has been referred to the police on Nevis and they are currently investigating.

On condition of anonymity, this publication spoke with a parent concerning this incident and he described it as disturbing and alarming.

“It is very disturbing because you can see clearly it was something planned. And if children going to school can plan to do one of their own like that, it leaves one to wonder what their future would be. One of them even took a stone and beat the person in their head. And what is alarming is that it wasn’t a male doing these things, it was a female.”

A mother who also spoke to SKNVibes said action needs to be taken immediately to curb this alarming trend before it escalates into the loss of life.

“I really don’t know what can be done to deal with this situation, but something has to be done and be done soon. Today we are hearing about fights, fist fights and fights with stones, we cannot wait until we hear about fights with knives and guns to do something about it. We cannot wait until we hear that one of our children has been killed in school by another to do something about it!”

SKNVibes made several attempts to contact the Minister of Education in the Nevis Island Administration, the Hon. Mark Brantley, for a comment but the efforts bore no fruit.
