BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Silver Jubilee Stadium in Bird Rock, St. Kitts will tomorrow (Apr. 5) be renamed in honour of the twin-island Federation’s most decorated international track and field legend, Kim Anderson Collins.

The announcement was made last evening (Apr. 3) by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Sports the Hon. Shawn Richards during the opening ceremony of the 44th CARIFTA Games at the Silver Jubilee Stadium.

“It is my distinct pleasure to publically announce that at a recent Cabinet meeting the Honourable Members approved the renaming of the Silver Jubilee Athletics Stadium to the Kim Collins National Stadium.”

Minister Richards also announced that the man who had put the relatively unknown St. Kitts and Nevis on the ‘athletics world map’ through his phenomenal performances would be present at the ceremony tomorrow.

“On Sunday, during the Games, we will have the official renaming ceremony in the presence of non-other than Kim Collins himself. Kim Collins, our lone World Championship gold medallist in Paris, France in 2003, was also a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Games in 2002.”

He pointed out that Collins’ achievements had inspired many young people and had brought national acclaim to the Federation as well as measured promotion to the national sport tourism product.

“Mr. Collins, a deserved national, continues to demonstrate consistent excellence in track and field, and the Federation is duly proud of him,” he added.

It was disclosed that the renaming ceremony would be held at three o’clock before the afternoon session commences.

Collins will be flying in for the occasion from Europe, where he is so far undefeated competing in the 2015 Indoor Season. And, coincidentally, tomorrow’s renaming ceremony falls on the day when the national icon will be celebrating his 39th birth anniversary.

The national sprint ace international career began some 19 years ago when he made it to the Quarter Finals in the 100m at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics Games. Four years later, at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Collins became the first athlete from the OECS to have competed in an Olympics Finals over the same distance.

Overall, he had made five appearances at that level of athletics. However, he came to prominence in 2003 when he won gold in the 100m at the World Championships.

Since then, Collins has been like old wine, mellowing with age. He is currently ranked number one in the world over 60m, having so far not lost a race in the 2015 Indoor season.

Since the opening of the Silver Jubilee Stadium in 2008, many nationals have been calling for the facility to be named in honour of Kim Collins.
