BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – YESTERDAY (Apr. 6) had provided the final opportunity for many people to squeeze the last bit of pleasure out of the Easter Weekend before heading back to work. And for many, the choice was obvious…what better way to end the weekend than participating in the Black San’ J’Ouvert Jam?

It was about 6:00 a.m., with the sun already kissing the streets of Sandy Point, when hundreds of revellers surrounded the Nu Vybes Band International, also known as ‘De Sugar Band’, for what they expected to be one of the best jams the festival had ever seen.

Beginning at the old Dollar Stretcher building in Romney Ground, the revellers, some of whom were dressed in yellow Carib shirts, jammed along the Island Main Road before making a turn down Fahie’s Road where the customary ‘Wet Down’ was held.

SKNVibes understands that during the event, some were displeased with the recurrent pauses by the band and felt that they were unnecessary. However, once the music was pumping the ready waistlines of the revellers were activated and jollity was on a high.

The event climaxed at Pump Bay, where an after-J’Ouvert Party was held, and entertainment was provided by Sweet Vybes Sound.

President of the Black San’ Festival Committee Amos ‘Flames’ Francis told SKNVibes that he saw the event as a success. He said he was particularly pleased that the event was incident free.

“It was well attended! The people enjoyed themselves without any crime or violence or anything that could have disrupted the event and cause it to be cancelled. And because of the way the people behaved and kept going together, when the J’Ouvert stopped while going down Pump Bay Road, we had to ask for a couple of extra minutes just to get to our destination. And it was allowed because of how well people were behaving.”

He said the event was to have begun at 5:00 a.m. but he took the decision to push it forward to the next hour just to ensure that the sun would have risen. He added that 6:00 a.m. was the earliest that a J’Ouvert or street activity had started in Sandy Point.

The entire event from start to finished lasted about eight hours and, according to Francis, from the accounts received, the J’Ouvert is the largest that the festival has seen in its five-year existence.

This was the second street activity for the Black San’ Festival 2015; the first being the Tractorcade which was held on March 28 and the final would be the Last Lap jam on April 11.
