The Department of Agriculture warmly invites you to celebrate with us as we host our 22nd Annual Open Day event from Thursday, 30th April to Friday, 1st May, 2015 at the Department’s grounds located at La Guerite, Basseterre, opening at 9am daily. Come see innovation, imagination and technology at its best! Our theme this year is “Embracing Agriculture and its Partners”. The four pillars of our Agricultural Development Strategy plan will be on display: Operation Food Security, Farming and Agricultural Systems Transformation, Agri-business and Market Development and Agricultural Risk Management and Climate Change Adaptation.
We will have a multitude of agricultural exhibits available to educate you: Home Garden space saving designs, Breadfruit Project booth, Protected Agriculture-Green House displays, Animal Farm, Tour of our brand new Operational Pack House (learn how to make breadfruit flour!), Ornamental Plant and Fruit Tree Sales, Coconut Bonanza and much, much more.
Looking for a career in Agriculture? Well we’ll have our Education Corner to help you choose wisely. Come interact with staff of the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. They will be on site to share with you opportunities right at your fingertips here in the Federation.
We haven’t forgotten our younger ones: bouncing castle, breadfruit and sweet potato ice cream specials, pumpkin jam, lucky dip and horseback riding. We have classic games with an agricultural twist. Try our innovative games: “Name that Plant”, “Animal Kingdom” and “Find the Prohibited Product”.
Are you a food connoisseur? The Food Court will be stocked with delicious local foods such as the ever popular “tree mutton”, local pork and mutton, breadfruit dishes, goat water and so much more. Cooperatives will be on hand to provide you with tasty snacks and thirst-quenching local drinks. There will also be a booth dedicated to all things Breadfruit, come sample different dishes all made from this ever versatile starch. Don’t forget to support our farmers at the Farmers’ Market with daily specials just for you.
