Name of traffic accident victim revealed

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - MORE information on the road fatality that took place on Monday evening (Apr. 6) has been revealed, including the name of the victim and that of the driver of the vehicle involved.

     

    A police press release issued today (Apr. 9) indicates that the vehicle – a pick-up truck bearing the registration number PA6167 – was at the time of incident being driven by Ajani Dunrod of West Farm and is owned by Noel’s Courtesy of Farms Estate.

    The accident took place along Johnson Long Path in the vicinity of the University of Medicine and Health Services.

    The release noted that the vehicle, which was carrying 12 individuals, was travelling towards West Farm at about 6:30 p.m. that evening when, according to information reaching SKNVibes, encountered difficulty which caused it to flip and collide with a tree.

    SKNVibes understands that the occupants of the vehicle were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for treatment and, according to the police’s communique, Kervin Bergan of West Farm “succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, one person was discharged and the other(s) are warded at the hospital”.

    A number of individuals who were aboard the vehicle were travelling in the lorry portion of automobile and SKNVibes understands that they were flung therefrom.

    The communique indicated that the Police Force has observed this practice of transporting individuals in the lorries of these vehicles and reminds that it is against the law.

    Making reference to the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Section 12 of Chapter 15.06, the release explained: “A driver of a motor vehicle shall not allow the motor vehicle to carry more persons than it was constructed to seat, or licensed to carry. In recent times the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has observed a number person transporting persons in open back vehicles. There is a procedure that has to be followed, and all concerned are ask to contact the Traffic Department concerning this procedure.”  

    Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd, on behalf of the organisation, has extended condolences to the bereaved family.
