Candle Light Vigil for Kervin Bergan

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DOZENS of candles were lit last evening (Apr. 11) by members of the United Villages of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point group and others during a candlelight vigil held in honour of the memory of Kervin Bergan who recently lost his life in a traffic accident.

The 27-year-old was travelling aboard a motor pickup on the evening of Monday, April 6 when it overturned and collided with a tree. While 11 individuals occupied the vehicle at the time of impact, Bergan was the sole fatality.

Sometime around dusk, the individuals gathered near the site of the accident and mounted a small wreath near to which a lit candle had been placed.

The gathering reflected on Bergan’s life, recalling the fond and happier memories and times which they had shared with him.

Words of encouragement were delivered by Pastor Ronald Taylor and the Rev. Khrystus Wallace and hymns of praise and thanksgiving to God were rendered.

Following the service, and with their lit candles, members of the gathering walked from that area to West Farm, the area where Bergan had lived up until his unfortunate demise.

Vice President of the United Villages of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point Ian ‘Threads’ Richards told SKNVibes that he knew Bergan for all of his life and remembers him as a quiet individual.

“I knew him all his life because I am older than him. We both grew up in the same villages which are West Farm and Boyds. He was a really quiet guy who kept to himself. He never used to talk much. He was a guy who anyone from our community could have depended on. He was one who, as the old time people used to say, you could send him out and he would do it diligently. He was very dependable.”

Richards said he had taken note that especially during the last six months of Bergan’s life, “I saw a real, real promising young man coming up in the community. One who tried to hold his family together…”

He recalled that on the evening of the accident, he was playing dominoes when his sister, having heard of it, called him to ensure he was okay.

“My first reaction was that I hope nothing happened to anybody. Then when I heard he had passed, it was hard.”

Public Relations Officer for the United Villagers of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point Verlyn Warner said she was pleased with the support shown by the community for the event.

“Usually, in the community, United Villagers of West Farm Boyds and Palmetto Point, as long as there is someone who is in need, the entire community comes together to give the support to those persons. So we had a good community support and even others from outside of the community who knew him and who were impacted by his life.”
