Black San’ ends with Last Lap Jam

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SMALL AXE BAND, Kollision Band, D-Fx Real Right Entertainment, colourful costumes, alcohol, bottoms in de road and hundreds of revellers took over the streets of Sandy Point Saturday afternoon (Apr. 11) for the penultimate activity before the close of the festival - the Last Lap Jam.

After gaining considerable momentum from its Romney Ground starting point and a building up of the crowd, the true spirit of Sandy Pointers and others from neighbouring and distant communities was displayed.

At the front of the parade was the folkloric aspect of the event which featured mummies and clowns who displayed their traditional kettle and fife music and dances. And intermingled in the crowd were several mock-a-jumbies.

Perched aboard a pickup truck were Miss Black San’ Swimsuit 2015 Felicia Silcott and the First Runner Up of that competition, Shamekia Prentice.

And then there was the action!! Bounce-n-clap, rhythm and bass, ‘wukup galore’; the revellers spared no effort in ensuring that they squeezed every last ounce of enjoyment out of the final jam event of the festival.

Women enjoying themselves by themselves and men doing the same while some were finding partners with whom they appeared to have enjoyed themselves in synchronised gyrations.

The true test came after light showers of rain threatened to bring the event to a premature end. It was far from enough though, as some revellers simply sought shelter under the stationary trailers which carried the bands and hi-fi systems, while some sought shelter elsewhere and others simply enjoyed the cooling showers.

The revellers went from one end of Sandy to the next before heading in the opposite direction and ending at the basketball court.

The facial, body and verbal expressions of the jammers were testament to the level of fun which they had. But there is something that must be said about the hundreds of individuals who, no matter what the occasion, take pleasure in lining the sides of the road and observing whatever the event is from that vantage point. It is probably their mode of enjoyment, and the Last Lap Jam was no exception.

SKNVibes spoke with Division ‘B’ Commander Superintendent Cromwell Henry who said the event went on without major incidents and noted that the minor ones were not enough to have a negative impact on it.

This publication observed that officers of District ‘B’ were on hand to maintain law and order during the event and members of the Drug Squad travelled aback of the jam queue.

The Black San’ Ball was to have been held last evening (Apr. 12) but this publication understands that it was either cancelled or postponed.
