Traffic Department to increase vigilance following road fatality

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has indicated its intention of increasing its vigilance in relation to motorists and their compliance with traffic laws of the land.

This comes in light of a recent unfortunate incident where a young man of West Farm lost his life after a vehicle on which he travelled overturned and slammed into a tree.

The young man, Kervin Bergan, was among several others who were travelling in the lorry or bed portion of the vehicle and they were all flung therefrom during the incident.

Head of the Traffic Department Inspector Carl Caines told SKNVibes that vehicles should not hold more individuals than they are registered to carry and, as it stands, pickup trucks are registered to carry only those who can comfortably fit within the cabin.

He said however that complaints were received from individuals, groups, companies etc. indicating that they have need to transport other individuals and the pickup trucks are either their only means of transportation or the most appropriate given the circumstances.

Inspector Caines said it is better to apply an ounce of prevention instead of a pound of cure and advised that pickup truck drivers and owners who wish to transport persons in the bed portion of the vehicle would have to seek authorisation from the Traffic Department, and then the appropriate seating arrangement, apparatuses or equipment would have to be installed.

He added that during this process, the owners should also liaise with their insurance provider to ensure that their coverage includes the changes being made.

“We are going to increase our vigilance to ensure that no matter who it is, the necessary precautions are taken and that those who are found breaching the law would be penalised, because an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.”
