BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Vance Amory-led Nevis Island Administration are seeking an all-weather synthetic track for the island in an effort to develop the track and field talent on Nevis.

In an interview with the media during the CARIFTA Games, Nevis Premier Hon. Vance Amory indicated that a synthetic track is needed to help develop young athletes.

“The possibility of having an all-weather track like this on Nevis will go a long way in helping to develop our athletes to realise their potential. Over the years we have produce athletes who had talent and over the years have fallen off because of the lack of a facility like this.”

He lauded the islands primary schools programme in the sport and pledged to continue committing resources to that level of it.

“It is our intention as the Government in Nevis, with support of the Federal Government, to push them as far as possible. If we can get that all-weather track it will make a big difference.”

Minister of Sports in the NIA Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams, disclosed that discussions are already underway with IAAF about the track for Nevis.

“One of the thrust for us this year in sports is the overall development of the sporting facilities. To date, we would have had fruitful discussion with Victor Lopez of the IAAF and he has given us a commitment that he will bring high on his agenda the need for a track in Nevis. And so we are looking forward to that later in the term.”

She also revealed some remedial work would be done to the existing facilities on the island.
