SKNIS Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 24, 2015 (SKNIS): The initial transformation from civilian to soldier was concluded for the 16thBasic Military Course of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force on Thursday (Apr 23) during a passing out ceremony at Camp Springfield.

The course which started on October 24, 2014 with 21 recruits ended with 16 recruits successfully completing the training and earning the title of soldier.

Filled with the pageantry of a military event, the young soldiers marched on to the parade square led by the training cadre and accompanied by the defence force Band to the resounding applause from the gathering of family, friends, defence force members and government officials.

Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris, presented the feature address and commended the young men and women on their choice to serve the people and the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis in the defence force.

“Today our federation, like many others in the Caribbean is facing the challenges of violent   crimes,” said Prime Minister Harris.

“You must play your part by being a law abiding citizen at all times,” Prime Minister Harris emphasized. “You will be called upon to assist the Royal St. Christopher Nevis Police in maintaining law and order in our federation and facilitating a peaceful environment for citizens, residents, visitors and investors. Peace and stability are keys to the realization of the promised prosperity. I thank you in advance for your contribution to our peace and prosperity.”

Prime Minister Harris in underscoring the transformation of the young soldiers said, “Your achievement is not due solely to your determination, but is also due in no small measure to the commitment and dedication of the instructors to whom was assigned the important task of making you into proud soldiers.” He went on to say, “Therefore, allow me to express my profound gratitude to the training officer and his team of instructors who have made this training the success that we are all celebrating today.” He then invited the recruits to applaud the training cadre of Lieutenant McCall, Warrant Officer Class 2 Williams, Staff Sargeant Huggins, Woman Corporal Carey, Corporal Phipps, Woman Lance Corporal Ephraine and Lance Corporal Clarke.

The 16th Basic Military Course was a class of firsts, in that the top 3 recruits were females.

The Prime Minister highlighted that the best recruit Private Zenra Ferdinand was absent from Thursday’s ceremony due to her selection to attend the Colonel Ulrich Pilgrim Officers Training School in Guyana and once successful, she will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and will have the distinction of becoming the first female from the federation to graduate from the prestigious officer training school.

Prime Minister Harris used that point to highlight the role of women in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“I mention this because I want our young women to understand that their gender will not disqualify them from the necessary training needed for their full development under my leadership,” Prime Minister Harris said. “The government of national unity is committed to promoting and fostering gender equality in the St. Kitts-Nevis Defense Force particularly and all areas of our society generally.  Today I am especially proud to have with me our first woman appointed to the high office of Cabinet Secretary.”

Prime Minister Harris ended his remarks with a charge to the new soldiers, “I say to you, do your duty at all times and act with honour and integrity.”
