Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 24, 2015 (SKNIS): Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris expressed his government’s commitment to ensuring the welfare of the security forces during remarks at the Passing Out ceremony for new soldiers of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force on Thursday (April 23).
Prime Minister Harris stated, “this government will continue to set high standards of training and education for the men and women in uniform and will ensure that they are kept abreast of the technological advancements that are relevant to the effective delivery of their respective mandates,” and went on to remind the audience that in Lime Kiln is a Joint Service Training Academy being built and will serve to improve the professional training and education for the security forces.
Dr. Harris went on to challenge the security force members on parade and in the audience by telling them “I am encouraging you to seize and to take advantage of the academic opportunities that present themselves. He went on to say, “We do not need soldiers who are only proficient in handling military hardware; we also need soldiers who are well trained and scholastically capable of making contributions to our country in non-traditional areas, and you may rest assured that my government will continue to support you in this regards.”
Prime Minister Harris added that the much is expected from the security forces, and pledged government’s support for infrastructure upgrades.
“In order to improve the enabling conditions so that you function at your highest capacity, the physical infrastructure of your bases will be upgraded,” he stated. Very shortly, renovation work will commence on the building at the Coast Guard Base. We are aware of the limitations at that facility and we are endeavouring to provide you with adequate administrative space, comfortable living accommodation and an environment conducive to maximum productivity.”
