On Wednesday April 29th at approximately 1:30pm there was a fault on the Basseterre Feeder and a subsequent fault on the Basseterre South feeder that led to an island wide blackout, SKELEC’s first in over nine (9) months.
At approximately 2:30pm over 80% of the island was restored with only downtown Basseterre, Port Zante and St. Peter’s without electricity. Restoration was completed at approximately 5:20pm after reconfiguration work was done on the grid, which was necessary for all affected areas to receive electricity supply.
On Thursday April 30th the source of the fault was identified, as an underground cable fault, in the vicinity of the SOL gas Station on Wellington Road. On Friday May 1st our technicians began working on repairing said cable and work will continue over the weekend. We are asking all drivers to be careful when driving in the vicinity as we would have workers present.
SKELEC apologises for any inconvenience caused during the outages as we look forward to continuing to provide safe and reliable electricity service.
