Dr. Douglas to serve second term as Opposition Leader

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FOR the second time in the political history of St. Kitts and Nevis, former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas will be appointed Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition.

After the 1989 General Elections, Dr. Douglas was for the first time nominated and appointed Leader of the Opposition in the Sir Kennedy Simmonds Administration.

Dr. Douglas was then elected Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis in 1995 and served in that capacity until he was replaced by Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris after his Labour Party lost the February 16, 2015 General Elections.

Malcom Guisahard of the Concerned Citizens Movement also served in that capacity from 1995 until his death in 2005. A by-election was subsequently held and won by the present Deputy Premier of Nevis and Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Mark Brantley, who held that post until the dissolution of Parliament in January 2015.

Tomorrow (May 14), Dr. Douglas is expected to be nominated and appointed for his second term in that capacity, but he had claimed that the Attorney-General had refused to prepare the Instrument of Appointment.

Yesterday at the Prime Minister’s press conference, Dr. Harris was questioned as to the reason for the delay.

“I don’t know what was the delay and why he is concerned, because I don’t know any instrument would change the position of opposition.

"Whatever instruments are to be prepared are prepared following the normal processes. So that is nothing over which to make any noise.

“It will be the judgement  of the Government to determine the priorities of all the matters that fall in the ambit of the Government.”
