BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – EVEN if they did not get the opportunity to view the historic convening of the Federal Parliament from inside the walls of Government Headquarters, scores of individuals filled the sidewalk facing the building this morning (May 14) to demonstrate that they would still be a part of the process.

Even before the nine o’clock hour had struck, individuals had begun making their way into the area awaiting the commencement of the different segments of the event.

Boisterous applause and cheers were heard as the Ministers of the Team Unity Government arrived and took the opportunity to greet some members of the assembled crowd.

The Guard of Honour, led by the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Band, made its way down, Church Street and took up its position directly in front of Government Headquarters.

Among the members of the crowd was a group of more than 30 third grade students of the Tucker Clarke Primary School, who too took delight in marching along with the Guard of Honour while proudly waving their miniature St. Kitts-Nevis flags.

The Guard of Honour consisted of members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, the St. Kitts and Nevis Defence Force and the St. Kitts and Nevis Coast Guard.

The crowd erupted again with applause and shouts when Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris arrived, and he shortly thereafter proceeded with his team into Government Headquarters for the official opening of the House of Assembly.

Members of the Opposition did not attend the event and had indicated reasons for their absenteeism in a release.

Following the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House, and after the Oaths to Members were administered, the House was suspended in anticipation of the arrival of the Governor-General’s Deputy, His Excellency Tapley Seaton QC, who took the salute from Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd and Commander of the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Colonel Patrick Wallace.

And after mounting the Saluting Dais, the National Anthem of the Federation was rendered by the Defence Force Band and the Guard of Honour was inspected by His Excellency.

Seaton was escorted to the inside of the building and into the halls of the Parliament, where he delivered the Throne Speech.

The Guard of Honour, as meticulously as it has arrived, left the area and made its way back to its point of origin.
The audience did not miss a beat as the televised occasion could have been viewed on a large screen mounted outside Government Headquarters.

Today marks the first in 20 years Parliament was convened without the Rt. Hon Dr. Denzil Douglas as the Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis.
