Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 14, 2015 (SKNIS): St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris has invited all residents and nationals abroad to observe the inaugural session of the National Assembly under the government of national unity today, May 14.
The highly anticipated Parliament will be streamed live by national broadcaster ZIZ Radio/TV and several other local radio stations. There will be limited seating available in Parliament chambers.
“There is therefore a size constraint,” Prime Minister Harris explained at his press conference held May 12. “Accordingly not all can be seated within the chambers so additional seating will be provided within the precincts of the Parliament and big screens will bring the proceedings real time for all to hear and see the momentous happenings during the convocation of Team Unity’s inaugural Parliament.”
Prime Minister Harris also revealed the key activities that would take place including the election of the nominated Speaker of the National Assembly.
“The substantive matters of the Assembly are these: (1) the members of the Assembly shall elect a Speaker in accordance with Section 32 of the Constitution,” Prime Minister Harris noted. “Our nominee in this regard is Mr. Franklin Brand Esq., a well known businessman. The Speaker on his election will then be properly robed and will take over the Speaker’s Chair. The second matter would involve the Deputy Speaker, he or she will be elected in accordance with Section 32. I am pleased to announce as we did before, that our nominee in this regard is Senator Mr. Michael Perkins.”
The Prime Minister further noted that members of parliament, both elected and nominated will take their oaths of office while the traditional Throne Speech will be presented by Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton, Q.C. By way of explanation Prime Minister Harris revealed the circumstances under which this took place.
“I am now in a position to say that His Excellency the Governor General has advised me that he will proceed on leave over the period 12th May to 17th May, 2015,” the Prime Minister revealed. “This in effect paves the way for one of our worthy citizens to read the Throne Speech. I am honoured to report that I have recommended the appointment of Mr. Samuel Weymouth Tapley Seaton, C.V.O., Q.C. former Attorney General over the period of 1980 to 1995, as the Governor General Deputy during the said period of absence of the Governor General.”
