The Green Valley community is preparing for its annual Green Valley Festival, celebrating nineteen years of "fostering Community development through cultural empowerment," a theme that has been the cornerstone of the Festival since its inception in 1996.
The people of the Green Valley have a rich tradition of celebrating their community during the annual Festival. This year's 19th anniversary celebration is slated for Saturday May 16 to Monday, May 25. The festival heightens during the Whit weekend when the stage is set alight by home grown pageantry, showcasing the beauty and talent of some of the community's young women, as well as a family beach celebration, live entertainment by DJ's and bands, culminating with Jouvert and a colorful street parade on Whit Monday.
Music, entertainment, folklore, fellowship and food abound during this time of year and the community welcomes all to take in the celebrations by attending the events.
For almost two decades, amidst myriad challenges, the Green Valley Festival has withstood the test of time. Year after year, despite the daunted spirits of some and the unfortunate loss of support of others, beauty queens find their way on stage, comedians come out to entertain, calypsonians educate and entertain through their prized art form, seniors look forward to their day of fellowship, children anticipate fun days, uninhibited reverie hits the streets and villagers embark on a series of festivities unique to those who continue to support the much loved Festival. Indeed, the Green Valley Festival remains the longest running and most renowned community festival in the nation.
Every year, the pride and spirit of community of the people of Cayon and its environs fuels the energies of thousands to make the festival a success.
This year's festival is dubbed "Set Up U Self," a reminder to thousands at home and abroad that Green Valley Festival is embarking on its annual celebration with a view to make way for a 20th anniversary celebration like no other, come 2016.
