Details provided in Old Road Bay accident

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DETAILS of the traffic accident that took place last evening involving a bus at Old Road Bay have been released by the Public Relations Department of the Police Force.

A communiqué issued earlier today (May 15) explained that the incident took place at about 10:00 p.m. and that the driver of the vehicle was Darren Francis of Station Street, Sandy Point.

SKNVibes understands that the vehicle is one used to transport individuals to and from church, a “church bus” and not a “passenger bus” as information previously given to this publication suggested.

“Initial investigation revealed that (Francis) was travelling from Basseterre to Old Road. When (he) got at Old Road Bay, a vehicle which was travelling in the opposite direction was travelling on the same side of road. In an effort to avoid the accident, Francis ran off the road into the sea water,” the release stated.

The release indicated that Francis sustained minor injuries and received treatment from Emergency Medical Technicians.

By SKNVibes’ count, this is at least the fifth vehicle to have crashed in the sea at Old Road Bay over the past seven years, and Divisional Commander of District ‘B’ Superintendent Cromwell Henry is again warning motorists to use the Federation’s roadways as cautiously as possible.

“Most accidents are caused by human error, which includes driving too fast for road conditions. The speed limit on a particular road does not mean one should drive at that speed; it is the maximum speed one is permitted to drive at.under good conditions. Therefore, on wet roads, sandy roads, narrow roads, and at nights, drivers are expected to drive at significantly-reduced speeds so that they can properly negotiate any unforeseen eventuality.

"Speed kills. Kill your speed”, he advised.
