By: St. Kitts Netball, Press Release

May 19th, 2015  --  Another year has flown by and the time to start another netball season is here. As we begin the 2015 league yet again without sponsorship I must reiterate the struggle and sacrifices that had to be made to ensure that today was possible because we understand our commitment to the young women in sport. I extend congratulations and sincerest appreciation to all the clubs participating this year and to the club sponsors for seeing the need to invest in our female athletes. Sponsorship as I stated last year is not a right but a privilege and in these trying economic times it is to be received with utmost humbleness. To all the club sponsors once again I say thank you. I must also thank the National Olympic Committee who continues to stand by our side and have helped us to maintain a good attendance record to tournaments by supplying gears and travel tickets for our girls. Mr. Alphonso Bridgewater President of the National Olympic Committee again I say thank you for all of your support.

The history of netball in St. Kitts has clearly shown that our under 16 and under 23 teams have produced some outstanding players. These players formed the foundation for strong senior teams. Unfortunately this year there is no under 16 team participating which then raise an instant alertness for what the future holds for this sport. Our association in partnership with the Sports Department have to work together in order to rectify this problem. If there are no young players competing at the junior level then this poses a threat to the longevity of the sport in St. Kitts. We have come too far in netball to allow it to fall by the way side. I am encouraging all the national players both past and present to adopt an upcoming netballer. Allow her to see the game through your eyes so that she can develop the passion for the sport and be able to reap the fruits that you at one point enjoyed. It is only through this relay of the history of the game being passed on to the upcoming players, whether by a mere conversation or by a one on one training session, will we be guaranteed that the future of the sport is secured. We can do our part to provide tournament, facilities and training but without the players it would be a waste of resources.

This year we have eight teams participating vying for the 2015 title.  This is not an easy feat and I encourage all teams to give of their best with each game. At the end of it all knowing that you have given your best will eliminate a feeling of inadequacy or doubt in your ability. Play hard but fair, adhere to the commands of the umpires and display sportsmanship throughout the entire season. To you the fans I invite you to this facility in July as we host the OECS/ECCB Under 23 championships. If you can remember the festive time we had here in 2009 when we rallied around our girls and saw them to their second OECS under 23 championship. Our girls need that same support and I encourage everyone to be here to cheer on St. Kitts. I must at this time express gratitude to veteran Jillian Archibald for her providing her services without hesitation when asked by the President to assist and oversee the training of the under twenty-three team.

I must commend all the players for sticking with the sport and I thank all the clubs for being on parade today. I also thank the coaches and managers. To the supporters you are the fuel to this sport. It is your faith in these girls and the sport itself that motivates us to continue.

I wish each team success and may the most disciplined and well skilled team win.
