BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – OFFICER-IN-CHARGE of the Cayon Police Station, Sergeant Carl Greaux has highlighted some of the initiatives and objectives he and his subordinates have implementing to curb crime in that community and its surrounding areas.

In an interview with SKNVibes, Greaux identified some targets he and the officers under his charge have set for 2015.

"We have a number of objectives for 2015. I had a meeting with my staff and we agreed upon reducing reported crime in the district by 12 percent and we are on track to achieving that this year.

"Other objectives we have to reassure our residents and visitors is to have quarterly meeting with stakeholders at the Cayon Community Centre, to have visible uniform foot patrol in the various communities within the district, to mediate between the gangs that operate within the district, to have an efficient and active school liaison between the police and the schools within the district, and also to introduce the concept of community policing.”

Greaux also highlighted his expectations and those of the officers whom he commands.

"Our vision at the station is to have a good team of officers who are motivated, well equipped and working harmoniously with all stakeholders to reduce crime within the district."

The district runs from Canada Estate to Lodge.

Sergeant Greaux was also asked how the residents have adopted to the community policing initiative.

"The community was the one for community policing. They were saying this is what police who were in the community before used to do."

He then identified some of the initiatives already implemented to help reduce the crime problem.

"I have been working with the Defence Force. What happened was that they had given me some officers to do some intelligence work and, based on that, we were able to remove a number of guns off the streets. Also, there has been an increase in the presence of the police within the district, which I credit to the reduction in shooting incidents."

Sergeant Greaux indicated that he had been working with a number of individuals within the district who were assisting the police with the crime problem.

He identified a Ms. Collins, who is the Community Officer; Duncan 'Big Lice' Wattley; Principal of the Cayon High School Adison James; and Dwight Warde as some members of the community who are assisting the police in their effort.

Greaux also had a word of warning for any potential criminal in the district.

"My message to the perpetrators of crime is to desist from that deviant behaviour. If you choose to continue we will catch and prosecute you."
