Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 26, 2015 (SKNIS):  Discussions on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between the Russian Federation and St. Kitts and Nevis have taken place in the capitol Basseterre.

This was among topics reviewed at meeting on Tuesday (May 26) with St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and His Excellency Vladimir Polenov, the Russian Federation’s Ambassador to St. Kitts and Nevis.

Specific areas of discussions included the establishment of a visa free travel agreement for citizens of both countries, opportunities for education and training in Russia, and sharing of resources and experiences in crime fighting.

Commenting on the visit, Prime Minister Harris stated, “The Russian Federation is a key member of the economic group BRIC and as such, innovation and technology have been key in the growth of their economy and the embrace of those (innovation and technology) is critical to building sustainable small island states.  And so, we will seek to build mutual partnerships with countries like Russia that can help St. Kitts and Nevis to achieve our national development goals.”

His Excellency Ambassador Polenov also met with the Honourable Mark Brantley, Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Honourable Vincent Byron, Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs.

During today’s meeting Ambassador Polenov recalled his first courtesy call with Dr. Harris in November 2014, in his capacity as the Leader of Team Unity.
