Crooke triumphs in Female 100M

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE track at the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium was once again set ablaze yesterday (Jun. 14) with superb performances by some of the top athletes in St. Kitts and Nevis.

The marquee event of the day however was the Women's 100m, which saw an eagerly-anticipated battle between former champion Virgil Hodge and defending champion Maricia Pemberton.

Both Pemberton and Hodge clashed in the Semi-Final earlier in the day with the latter edging the former to carry some momentum into the Finals.

However, it was the Shenel Crooke who emerged winner as she flew out of the blocks and had Hodge and Pemberton fighting to remain in contention. Hodge however made a late charge on Crooke but it was all in vain.

Crooke finished in a time of 11.48 while Hodge clocked 11.56 second and Pemberton finished a distant third in 12.00 seconds.

Another big race that took place was the Men’s 200 metres Finals that was convincingly won by national record holder Antoine Adams, who finished in 20.24 seconds ahead of Brijesh Lawrence who clocked 20.66. The Bronze medal went to Allaister Clarke.

Adams led the race from start to finish and his only threat was provided by Lawrence.

The Boys U-13 1000m in the Pentathlon saw Rafique Morson, who trailed for the majority of the race, finding a burst of energy and sprinting past the other three competitors to record a convincing but highly competitive win.

Krystal Liburd continued her winning ways by capturing the Women's Long Jump with a leap of 5.71 metres.

Some of these athletes would be aiming to be a part of the St. Kitts and Nevis National Teams for the Pan Am Games and World Championships, among other meets.
