Facing the 2015 Hurricane Season with Confidence and Peace

Press Release

June 18th, 2015  --  “When the oceans rise and thunders roar, I would soar with you above the storm. Father you are King over the flood. I will be still and know you are God” (lyrics of the song ‘Still’ by Hillsong) reverberated in Sandy Point at the Catholic Church when the group, Sandy Point Community Churches, held its annual Prayer Service at the start of the hurricane season.

In a very lively and motivational service, the faithful of the various Christian congregations in Sandy Point gathered on Wednesday, 10th June, 2015 to direct all prayers unto God for His protection and guidance during the 2015 hurricane season. According to the organisers, the expressed aim of this Prayer Service was entrusting the families, community, nation and region into the hands of our God, particularly during the hurricane season.

Through music, song, poetry, Scripture readings- Psalm 130, Luke 8:22-25, and Mark 4:35-41- and prayers those present focused firstly on God’s providential care, and His compassionate and merciful nature, before making intercession for God’s protection during this hurricane season.

Pastor Collin Mulley of the Calvary Baptist Tabernacle delivered a brief yet solid sermon entitled, “Peace in the midst of the Storm”. Using Mark 4:35-41 as his base text, Pastor Mulley reiterated that we can only know peace in our hearts during the various storms of life, if we trust Jesus and have Him securely at the helm of our vessel. He then offered three (3) advantages of having Jesus in ship of our lives: Jesus gives a sense of direction, He provides a sense of stability in the unexpected circumstances of life, and He gives assurance of eternal life. The sermonette concluded with Pastor Mulley asserting that we know not what lies ahead this hurricane season, but Our God knows and offers us His calm assurance of peace in the midst of any storm.

A designated time of earnest intercession commenced thereafter with individuals petitioning heaven seeking God’s protection of our region, our nation, and our people. Special prayers were made for our children and families.

The Service concluded with Pastor Prisca Hyligar, Chairperson of the Sandy Point Community Churches extending a warm welcome to the Sandy Point Community to Fr. Jegan, the new Catholic priest, as well as Rev. Bagnall of the St. Anne’s Anglican Church. Pastor Hyligar also offered the Vote of Thanks,  Closing Remarks and Closing Prayer.

There were no regrets from those who attended and many reported that they were leaving with greater confidence in God and peace as we go through the 2015 hurricane season.

The Sandy Point Community Churches is a group of leaders/representatives from the various churches in the town of Sandy Point. The group meets and plans ecumenical events for the people of the area and the nation throughout the year. The ‘Sandy Point Community Churches’ functions under the motto “Putting aside differences to help and heal our community”.
