BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER more than six months of an intensive investigation, members of the Violent Crime Unit have made a breakthrough in the Kevin ‘Broadie’ Newman’s murder and one man was charged with the capital offence.

Slapped with the murder charge is 26-year-old Fitzroy ‘Big Man’ Challenger of St. Paul’s Village.

Speaking with this publication, Acting (Ag) Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd said Challenger was today (Jun. 18) charged with the murder of Newman.

He indicated that though many people might have had the belief that Newman’s murder was considered a cold case and investigations had ceased, “officers of this Police Force were assiduously working to find the perpetrator, of which they excellently did”.

The Commissioner (Ag) declared that there are many more cases in which investigations are ongoing and sleuths are diligently working to bring them to a close.

He took the opportunity to congratulate the officers who had brought Challenger to justice and extended his gratitude to those members of the public who had collaborated with the police in seeing that justice is done.

On the evening of Saturday, November 1, 2014, Newman, a passenger bus driver, was travelling along the stretch of road between Dieppe Bay and St. Paul’s in the White Gate area when he was shot and killed during a robbery attempt.

This is not the first time that Challenger is facing a murder charge.

He, along with Jamal ‘Deuce Man’ Bradshaw, was charged with the September 8, 2006 murder of 16-year-old Josh Smithen of Old Road. However, after two trials, both men were found not guilty in January 2009.

On Thursday, February 17, 2011, he was sentenced to serve three years with hard labour at Her Majesty’s Prison for entering a dwelling house with intent to rape.
