Further assistance brought to visually impaired students

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FURTHER assistance has been given to the visually impaired students of the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School.

Through the school, the children were recently presented an embosser and JAWS for Microsoft software which are expected to revolutionise their methods of learning.

On Thursday (Jun. 18), donor of the abovementioned items, Jean Quinn, along with Mickey Weintraub and Connie Jagner, visited the school to deliver other tools to assist the children in reaching their educational goals.

The tools included brail books, sound puzzles, embossing paper and catalogues which the teachers are to peruse and indicate what other resource material and equipment they would need for the children.

Quinn told SKNVibes that the equipment would assist in preparing the students to actively and successfully engage in activities in which others engage.

“Without brail there is nowhere for them to go. With brail, which is a tool, they would be able to become a part of the sighted world. Brail is an absolute necessity to the blind and visually impaired because it allows them to do what sighted people do. It will definitely further their education.”

Quinn received a pleasant surprise when, after presenting the items, she was given a plaque of appreciation, courtesy the Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School.

In presenting the memento, teacher Doriell Bowry said she is thankful that Quinn had taken the time to recognise the school and the potential it possesses and for investing in the education of the students.

“I’m just completely overwhelmed. I did not expect this at all. This is why I do this (pointing to the excited children who were busy enjoying the sound boards). Because they soo need this and they are so bright and need the right tools.”

The plaque, which reads “In grateful appreciation to Jean Quinn for her significant contributions to the education of our blind students at Cotton Thomas Comprehensive School”, would be hung prominent in one of the rooms of the education facility.

Before leaving the compound, Quinn et al spend some quality time with the students of the class for the visually disabled.
