BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - (11:30a.m.) THE St. Kitts Meteorological Office has advised that the flashflood warning that was imposed earlier this morning (Jun. 22) has been downgraded to a flashflood watch.

(9:43 a.m.) - THE Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis has been placed under flashflood warning, according to information issued by the St. Kitts Meteorological Office (Met Office).

As the day (Jun. 22) began, the Federation is experiencing the effects of a thunderstorm with bouts of torrential rain.

And while the rain is welcomed by most, many prefer not to have to deal with the explosive sounds of the rolling thunder.

Senior Met Officer at the Met Office Elmo Burke told SKNVibes that the current weather is due to a tropical wave which is interacting with an upper level trough.

He said the expectation is that rainfall would continue throughout the course of the morning and, as such, the Met Office found it necessary for a flashflood warning to be implemented.

“We are anticipating, for the rest of the morning, that we are going to have cloudy to overcast skies with periods of moderate to heavy showers. Hence, we have requested Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Office to issue a flashflood warning for the Federation with immediate effect and that will be reviewed as the day progresses to see whether or not we would be downgrading it to a flashflood watch or discontinue it.”

As a precaution, Burke advised that motorists and other individuals avoid using main watercourses such as College Street and Westbourne Ghauts, at least for the duration of the advisory.

Motorists are asked not to park their vehicles in these waterways as it is possible that flashfloods can occur without prior warning.
