BVI, June, 22nd, 2015  --  BVI London Office Director Benito Wheatley recently joined a gathering of emerging Caribbean leaders at Wilton Park in the United Kingdom to develop a 2030 vision for the region. The emerging leaders who met from 1 – 3 June under the theme ‘Caribbean 2030: New thinking for a new generation’ were comprised of young professionals from across the Caribbean region who included, among others, Jamaica Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Hon. Andrew Holness, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Foreign Minister Hon. Camillo Gonslaves, Belize Ambassador to the United States and incoming Assistant Secretary General of the Organisation of American States (OAS) H.E. Nestor Mendez and Dominican Republic Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs and Trade Negotiations Cesar Dargam Espaillat.

The participants discussed the current state of affairs across the Caribbean with respect to politics, international relations, trade, environment, energy, social development, regional integration and regional cooperation; and explored ideas on how a better future cold be shaped for the region.

Wheatley chaired one of four discussion groups in which he spearheaded the drafting of a 2030 vision, which he also presented in the final plenary.  He was highly commended by the organisers and participants for his exceptional leadership skills and consensus building at the meeting.

Speaking on the conference, Wheatley said,

“Caribbean 2030 was a meaningful exercise.  It was particularly useful to consider the future of the Caribbean along with some of the leading emerging leaders in the region.  We all want a future for the Caribbean where prosperity, security and sustainability are the order of the day.  It is now up to each of the participants when they return to their respective societies to share this experience with others and to consider practical ways by which the key elements of a 2030 vision can be achieved in their countries”.

Caribbean 2030 was spearheaded by Wilton Park, a think tank of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Benito Wheatley is currently the Director of the BVI London Office and the territory’s representative in the UK and European Union.  He previously held the post of Deputy Director.
