Acting CoP clears air on new funeral arrangements

Commissioner of Police (Ag) Stafford Liburd
By: Stanford Conway, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ACTING COMMISSIONER Stafford Liburd has cleared the air on the new system that the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force had recently implemented in the removal of bodies of homicide and suspected homicide victims from a crime scene.

In a previous article, this media house had quoted the Commissioner (Ag) as saying: “Going forward, we are moving away from the practice of only one funeral home having the responsibility to remove the body of a suspected homicide victim from a crime scene and have it prepared for burial...”

This statement had raised concerns in some quarters, in which it was said that while a particular funeral home was contracted to remove the bodies, it might not have been the one responsible for their burial.

In an effort to clear the air on the statement made by the Acting Commissioner, this media house visited his office last week Thursday afternoon (Jun. 18) and was satisfied with his response.

“I want to confirm that the Police Department, as of June 2015, began a process of rotating the services of funeral homes when required by the police. We will start in June with Liamuiga Funeral Home; July, the Eastern Benevolent Society Funeral Home; August, Ross and Clarke; September, Jenkins Funeral Home. And that is the process we will be arranging regarding the matter.”

Liburd explained what was done in the past, noting that it is in the Police Force’s record books.

“The record of the Police Department indicates that for several years the vast majority of funeral services were handled by a single funeral home in terms of handling the body. I want to make it clear...handling the body! It is not necessarily that the funeral services itself was conducted by the person, because family may have chose different. But the initial stage of moving the body from wherever the location is until the post mortem or whatever was done, that was handled by more or less one funeral services.”

The Commissioner (Ag) has singled out Jenkins Funeral Home for commendation, noting the professional services it had rendered over the years.

“I however wish to confirm that over 10 years we have had professional services rendered to us by Jenkins Funeral Home, for which we are happy, and we expect that relationship to continue. But it is just that the system now requires us to rotate.”
