Bus driver charged with causing death by careless driving

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE bus driver who was taken into police custody last week after a man was struck by a passenger bus and killed, has been charged with causing death by careless driving.

A police press release issued last week informed that Leroy James of Saddlers Village was taken into police custody and was said to be assisting them with investigations into the incident which took place on the evening of June 14, 2015.

The communique expressed that the police’s preliminary investigations revealed that “motor omni bus H1766 driven by Leroy James of Saddlers Village was travelling towards Sandy Point direction when he struck a pedestrian, Mr Laughton Lake of Newton Ground. Mr. Lake was transported to the J.N.F General Hospital by the E.M.S where he succumbed to his injuries”.

The press release also indicated that a post mortem was performed on Lake and it was concluded that death was due to “hypovolemic shock due to multiple traumatic lesions as a result of a traffic accident”.

Head of District B Superintendent Cromwell Henry told SKNVibes that James was charged yesterday (Jun. 22) and appeared before the Magistrate’s Court today.

He informed that James was granted bail in the amount of $75,000 with two sureties and as attached conditions, his driver’s license was suspended and he is to report to the Dieppe Bay Police Station once per week.

The case would advance to the Preliminary Inquiry stage and if it is found that there is enough evidence to mount a case against James, it would advance to the trial stage.
