Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 26, 2015 (SKNIS): St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris on Thursday (June 25) met with Baroness Patricia Scotland, candidate for the post of Commonwealth Secretary General. At the beginning of her visit Baroness Scotland paid a courtesy call upon the Governor General, His Excellency Tapley Seaton. She also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Mark Brantley and the Attorney General, the Honourable Vincent Byron.
Prime Minister Harris said he was delighted to have met with Baroness Scotland whom he described as being very well informed. The Prime Minister further said that her visit was very enlightening.
In addition to meeting with several Government officials Baroness Scotland also met with some former Parliamentarians including the Nation’s first Prime Minister Dr. Sir Kennedy Simmonds, the former Deputy Prime Minister and current UN Ambassador, His Excellency Sam Condor, and the first woman elected to Parliament, Constance Mitcham, a former Minister of Health and Women’s Affairs.
Baroness Scotland who is currently visiting the twin island Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, has described her visit as “very productive” and “truly enjoyable”. She was particularly touched that Sir Kennedy fondly remembered her father, Arthur L. Scotland a former Antiguan Cricketer of note.
Baroness Scotland, the first woman to ever hold the post of Her Majesty’s Attorney General of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, is the Candidate of the Government of Dominica. Last night on “Caribbean News Line” seen here in St Kitts and Nevis, Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit stated, unequivocally, that Baroness Scotland is the most qualified Candidate.
Baroness Scotland was born in the Commonwealth of Dominica to a Dominican mother and an Antiguan father. Her parents moved the family of ten children from Dominica to England, like many Caribbean people of the day, in search of opportunities for tertiary education.
The former CARICOM Deputy Secretary General, Lolita Applewhaite, accompanied Baroness Scotland on her visit. Baroness Scotland and Ms. Applewhaite are slated to leave the Federation on Friday (June 26).
