Labour Officer Jeneve Mills presents to MEND participants.
By: SKNIS, Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 29, 2015 (SKNIS): The Department of Labour is strengthening its engagement with the public, as it seeks to educate and inform workers about their rights and increase their productivity.

Officials recently partnered with the Department of Social Services to facilitate a session with some 50 persons participating in the Mold, Empower, Nurture and Direct (MEND) programme designed to strengthen the family unit. Labour Officers Shernel James and Jeneve Mills conducted the session.

The duo looked at areas aimed at preparing workers for the job market. These included practical topics such as how to write a job application letter, how to produce a résumé, preparing for a job interview and more. The participants were also briefed on worker’s rights.

“It was very interactive and they took a lot of notes,” Ms. James explained, adding that a lot of questions were asked. Each member was encouraged to visit the Labour Office on New Street for further information and/or assistance. Ms. James thanked the Department of Social Services for its ongoing partnership which was cemented about five years ago.

The Department of Labour has conducted briefings with other public and private sector agencies. These include the St. Christopher Air and Sea Ports Authority (SCASPA), The Cable and the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. Businesses or groups interested in having sessions for their members are encouraged to contact 467-1099.
