BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A search is expected to continue when morning breaks today (Jul. 1) for a teenager who was aboard a fishing vessel that capsized yesterday morning while at sea.

Superintendent Cromwell Henry, Commander of District ‘B’, informed SKNVibes that the vessel left shore at Saddlers sometime after 6:00 a.m. with two occupants, Wilson Caines and Chris Dorset, both of Dieppe Bay.

He explained that while some six miles out at sea, the vessel capsized because of high winds and both men were flung from it. Eventually the vessel was again positioned on its bottom and attempts were made to catch it but because its engine was still running, the attempts failed.

Henry said both decided to swim ashore but after about 10 minutes, Caines, who is said to be about 18 years old, gave up because of the boisterous waves.

Dorset, the older of the two, braved the elements and approximately 12 hours later, made it to shore in the Lynches area.

He was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.

Superintendent Henry said fishermen from the area as well as the St. Kitts-Nevis Coast Guard were engaged in a search for Caines but sometime during the evening, it was called off because the sea was covered in darkness. He said up until the time that the search had been called off, Caines had not yet been found.

He advised however, that when morning breaks, the search would resume.
