BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - NO weather report was given or was there any warning of an impending Gayle storm as the Appleton Estate Jamaica Tallawahs blew away the St. Kitts-Nevis Patriots in their first home game at Warner Park last evening (Jun. 30).

The Tallawahs won the match by seven wickets and with five balls to spare.

After winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the Patriots had an indifferent start having taken 12 off the first over but lost Evin Lewis in that same over.

However, the other opener, Martin Guptill and home boy Tonito Willet steadied the Patriots ship with a 76-run partnership. They at times however struggled to find the boundary but were able to keep rotating the strike.

Willet then found his stride and hit a few lusty blows on his way to 31 from 28 balls before he tried one shot too many and was out off the bowling of Vetorri.

Guptill was then joined by captain Marlon Samuels, who looked to push on the Patriots innings.

Guptill then went on to crack a few boundaries and marched on to 50 to loud cheers from the crowd. He however perished trying to go for a maximum but held out to long off.

Samuels continued the Patriots charge and pushed the team up to 160 before succumbing to the penultimate delivery of the innings.

In response, the Tallawahs tried to make light work of the Patriots total, getting some big hits from openers Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton. Walton however got his marching orders from Sheldon Cottrell who, in his traditional celebratory style, gave him a salute as he headed towards the pavilion.

Twenty20 maestro Galye was then joined by Chris Lynn and the pair was content with singles and occasionally picked up the odd boundaries.

It was not until the 12th over before Gayle launched his first six, hitting the ball over 100 metres into Lozac Road.

The following over saw Lynn hitting Samuels for three consecutive sixes but was bowled by Brathwaite for 52.

Lynn was replaced by Jayawadene who did not remain long at the crease as he lost his wicket playing a bad shot.

Looking to increase the Tallawahs scoring rate, Gayle skied a delivery to the outfield and it was dropped by Orlando Peters, which brought a huge sigh of disappointment from the Patriot supporters.

Needing 18 from two overs, the Patriots turned to Tanvir who was taken to task by Andre Russell and Gayle. Together they got 17 from the penultimate over and Gayle brought the match to an end when he found the boundary off the first ball of the final over.

Galye was named Man of the Match for his unbeaten 72.

Following the game, coach of the Patriots Eric Simons bemoaned his team’s drop chances, indicating that they could have been game changers if they were taken.

He also indicated that his team should have aimed to pick up more singles and doubles instead of trying to find the boundary rope during their innings.

Simons was also disappointed not to send the near capacity crowd at Warner Park home with a win from the team’s first home game.
