2015 Hero Caribbean Premier League – Match Report 10:

By: CPL, Press Release

Barbados Tridents (148-8) beat St Lucia Zouks (133-9) by 15 runs

Wednesday, 1st July – Basseterre, St Kitts: The Barbados Tridents further cemented first place in the Hero Caribbean Premier League with a win over the St Lucia Zouks in a top of the table clash at Warner Park. Yet another half century from Shoaib Malik set up a target of 149. The Zouks would have been confident of chasing that down but some brilliant bowling from Jeevan Mendis and Robin Peterson, on a pitch that took considerable turn, saw the Zouks slump to defeat having been well placed at the halfway stage.

As we saw in the St Lucia leg of the tournament, the Zouks quick bowlers began well. Fidel Edwards and Shannon Gabriel have bowled the quickest deliveries of this year’s CPL and Gabriel extended his lead at the top of the chart with the first ball of over 150kph at this tournament. Edwards managed to get the ball swinging with his low, slingy action making it very hard for the batsmen to attack in the Powerplay.

At the end of the first six overs the Tridents were 29-0 with Dwayne Smith really struggling to get going. Smith did not hit his first boundary until the seventh over and he was lucky not to be dismissed when he was dropped by Roach on the boundary off Nathan McCullum. Just two balls later McCullum had his revenge when he caught Smith one handed off his own bowling to dismiss the opener for 22 off 28 balls.

The Tridents experimented by sending in Robin Peterson at the fall of the first wicket. Peterson was caught attempting a ramp shot having made just one run off five balls. Shoaib Malik’s innings got off to a flying start, hitting two of the first five balls he faced to the boundary.

Dilshan Munaweera fell attempting to hit Sammy over long on for six to leave Malik and Kieron Pollard with a huge amount to do to get the Tridents to a competitive total. When Pollard was brilliantly run out by McCullum the Zouks were in complete control.

Gabriel put together a brilliant spell, conceding just 18 runs off his four overs, but it could have been even better. His final over cost 13 of those runs and included three wides, but it was still a great performance from the quick man from Trinidad.

Once again it was Malik who was the pick of the Barbados batsmen as the leading CPL run scorer of all time made his way to 51 off 34 balls in the only innings of note for the Tridents. He fell in the 20th over, well caught by Darren Sammy, but he was the man most responsible for guiding the Tridents to 148-8, a total that turned out to be a winning one.

When the Zouks innings got underway Andre Fletcher made the total look far too small as he smashed 36 runs inside the Powerplay, including three Hero Maximums. He lost his opening partner, Johnson Charles when he was bowled by Peterson and some poor running saw Kevin Pietersen run out. Despite this Fletcher kept going on his way to a brilliant half century.

The second half of the Zouks innings saw the Tridents build real pressure as Ross Taylor struggled to get going, not hitting the ball to the ropes at all in his innings of 20 off 26 balls. Fletcher had to make up for this loss of momentum and he departed for 52 off 34 balls, well caught by Pollard in the deep when he tried to force the pace.

Taylor departed when he was stumped off the bowling of Mendis and the leg spinner made it two in two when he had Kyle Mayers caught at first slip with a brilliant googly. Mendis was the pick of the Tridents bowlers as he finished with 2-15 off his four overs.

The run rate continued to climb and, as the Zouks attempted to accelerate, wickets fell. Henry Davids departed for just eight and the fate of the St Lucia side rested with their captain, Darren Sammy. He clearly hadn’t given up as he belted Pollard over midwicket for six to bring up his team’s 100. The Zouks’ captain was almost swinging himself off his feet in an attempt to get the ball to the boundary. It wasn’t to be as he top edged an attempted pull off Rayad Emrit that was caught by the keeper.

With the departure of Sammy, the Zouks challenge fell away and the Barbados Tridents ran out convincing winners as their charge to automatic qualification to the CPL final continues.
