2015 Natta Scholars honoured at annual ceremony

Press Release

Basseterre, St. Kitts - The William Marcus Natta Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded, for a fifth year, its scholarship celebrating academic excellence and community involvement, to two ambitious and well-rounded students at Tucker-Clarke Primary School. This year’s recipients are 12 year-old Shéona Nelson, an aspiring neurosurgeon and future teacher and mentor, 11 year-old Khaleem Challenger.

Shéona excels in the classroom and keeps herself busy outside of school participating in netball and track and field. She is also a member of the Girls Brigade. Khaleem also is quite active in and out of school. He represents his school on the football and track and field teams, is a member of the Boys Brigade, Methodist Youth Choir and Olivet Gospel Hall Youth Group.

At the Fifth Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony held Monday June 29, 2015, the 2015 Natta Scholars were presented with a plaque, cash award as well as two gift certificates, redeemable at Schools Apex Co-Operative and Laws Bookstore. The scholarship recipients also received a brand-new HP touchscreen tablet and the other applicants received a small gift compliments of the William Marcus Natta Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The featured speaker for the scholarship awards ceremony was Ervin Welsh, owner of the strategic marketing consulting firm Beyond Timeless. Mr Welsh gave an impassioned address to the audience of teachers and students under the ceremony’s theme “One Step Starts a Journey.” The young CEO took the audience on his journey from his first graphic design (a basic invitation card) to his prominent magazine designs, web designs and more. He encouraged the students to continue to improve one step at a time and to keep yearning to learn more each day.

“It is such a blessing to be able to give back to my community and country in this form over the last five years,” said Fund Chairman and Founder, Dr Marcus L. Natta. “I know my father would be proud as he loved to see young people excel. We hope our Fund will continue to grow so that we can offer support to other young scholars for many more years to come.”

The William Marcus Natta Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in April 2010 to support students in grades five and six who demonstrate academic excellence, sound moral character and passion for community service. Each year, a male and female student are selected for the scholarship award.
